BEIJING - Chinese state media says the government will meet with a private representative of the Dalai Lama soon. The government-controlled Xinhua News Agency says it has learned the development "from official sources."
Xinhua reported Friday that an official said the government would contact an aide of the Tibetan Buddhist leader in the coming days, "in view of the requests repeatedly made by the Dalai side for resuming talks."
China has been under international pressure to open a dialogue with the Dalai Lama since it cracked down on anti-government riots in Tibet in mid-March.
NEW DELHI (AFP) - The Dalai Lama welcomes Beijing's offer to meet one of his representatives for talks, a spokesman for the Tibetan spiritual leader told AFP on Friday. After China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported that talks would take place in the coming days, spokesman Tenzin Takla said it was "a step in the right direction as only face-to-face meetings can lead to a resolution of the Tibetan issue."
